This overtly offensive advertisement can be found in Abercrombie & Fitch stores across America--on T-SHIRTS! I don't even know where to begin in terms of discussing all of the problematic aspects of this image. First, the simplistic cartoon-like caricatures of the two Asian men in this image recalls Omi and Winant's essay entitled "Racial Formations" in that they discuss how in U.S television (and clearly in other aspects of the media) "the need to define characters in the briefest and most condensed manner has led to the perpetuation of racial caricatures, as racial stereotypes serve as shorthand for scriptwriters..." (17). The men in this image do not have eyes, but rather, small slants instead. These caricatures of Asian men wearing the stereotypical pointy hat only perpetuates racial stereotypes and proves the American obsession with race and racial formations.
Next, I find the language written on the T-Shirt to be extremely offensive vis a vis the phrase "two wongs can make it white". This message perpetuates the stereotype that Asian Americans speak in broken English, and are therefore, less intelligent and sophisticated in terms of societal standards. This shirt alienates Asian Americans because it promotes the idea that Asian's can never be, in societies eyes, considered alongside other "Americans" since their broken English and clear physical differences make place them perpetually on the outside. This shirt is extremely offensive, and it proves that racism and eurocentrism is still very real and present in our culture today.
